The FIT pays the PV generator for all the electricity they produce from their PV system regardless of whether the electricity is used on site or not.
If the electricity is used on site (before going through the import meter), then this electricity can be consumed without charge and offsets the import costs. Any electricity going into the grid can be sold for a further 3p per kWh*.
Once signed up with a FIT supplier e.g. EDF, Npower etc, the generator will receive payments for their energy for 25 years.
The payments are index linked, tax free and until March 2012 payments for generated electricity are 21.0p per kWh*.
